Halloween Fun Brings Scary Risks of Pedestrian Accidents
We all know kids (and lot of adults too) love Halloween. They enjoy putting on their costumes, trick or treating, and of course eating all the candy. Unfortunately, Halloween has been found to increase the risk to children ages 5-14 years old of being injured in a pedestrian accident.
According to the CDC analysis of information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of four deaths a year happen for children ages 5-14 on Halloween between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., compared to one such death at this time the remainder of the year.
The key then becomes how do we limit these accidents? First, adults must remember while driving on Halloween to be particularly vigilant driving through neighborhoods. No phones, no rushing, just careful attention to potential little ones trick or treating. Kids, caught up in the excitement of the day, often cross the street suddenly. So, careful attention is paramount.
Second, we can use these common-sense tips to help keep our kids safe. Here are some tips for parents and children provided by Safe Kids Worldwide. to ensure a safe and fun Halloween:
- Make sure that an adult or an older, responsible youth supervises young children.
- Cross the street at corners, using crosswalks or traffic signals.
- Try to find neighborhoods with sidewalks for trick or treating.
- Give your children flashlights or glow sticks to carry and wear.
- Make sure that your child’s costume fits correctly and is not long enough to cause a fall.
We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.
